Hi all, I firstly wanted to apologise for my absence, I have had a real roller coaster couple of weeks with personal issues but I am hoping to be back on track and a regular blogger again!

Chinese New Year!!! This is one of my Fave celebrations through the year. There is always so much to do and explore! Last night I set up a Chinese display and exploring corner in the playroom which has been visited a lot today and has started lots of conversations about Chinese culture, food, clothing, and the Chinese new year celebrations!

I set out a tray activity which involved using chop sticks to pick up small items and place them in to a wooden bowl! This was actually quite tricky and some of the things that I thought would be easy to pick up, turned out to be quite hard! One child actually had a really good natural hold on the chop sticks which I found very impressive as he was only 2!

We also enjoyed a cooking session. We cooked Noodles and egg fried rice for lunch. The children added Soy sauce to their noddles and pretty much everyone enjoyed them. Some even tried to use the chop sticks to eat the noodles! We tried some Lychee, which are on of my favourite fruits and my boys enjoy them too! No body fancied trying them though, after I took the skins off. I think they thought they looked more appetising when they were spikey! One child did lick hers but thats as far as it went! All the more for me then!!

This afternoon Kenzie and I painted a dragon for his Chinese New Year homework. He worked so hard on it and looked at books and a toy dragon to get ideas of what to add to his painting. He chose green and red paint and lots of glitter to make it sparkle! In the morning we are going to add some Silver pen details to the picture to finish it off. He asked me to help him with the wings so I outlined over the top of the bits he had painted and he seemed happy with that!

So that's how we spent the first day of our celebrations.... looking forward to lots more throughout the week!!

This week, the children who come to my setting, have been enjoying sounding out some simple, Phonetically spelt 3 letter words and some more complex 4 letter ones as well. We have been using The Melissa and Doug "See and Spell" toy and the Children seem to be loving it.
It's really helping them with letter recognition and to learn the letter sounds. Because the activity is self correcting, they know when they have got it wrong and change the letter to fit the correct hole. We sound out each letter as we go along, this helps them to brake down the words in to smaller pieces and the more they did this, the easier it became for them. It was very rewarding to see them pick this up and start to recognise each letter. They really shone with Pride when they finished a card. Several children asked me to take a picture of their word and to txt it to Mummy!

I thought I would share a couple of pictures of them spelling out their words!

So far this week we have had a fun but quite relaxed time! My planning for this week includes some fun art activities, exploring ice and Arctic animals and a bit of baking thrown in for good measure!

I had planed on making some snowmen with the children using paper plates. Monday morning we popped along to the Play bus that visits the village and what were they making........ Paper plate snowmen! Maybe I'm psychic!!!

So we had a fabby time reading stories, choosing some winter stories to take out on loan to enjoy at home and choosing some Elmer books for Kenzies class as this is their topic at the mo!
Whilst walking home the sky was full of Red Kites. They were once almost completely gone form this area but a breeding program and nesting ground was introduced and now they are like pigeons! In fact we see more Kites here than any other birds! Today there were 20 all swooping over us looking for lunch!

We have also had lots of fun exploring the changes in water as it is frozen and de-frosted. We explored some new words, "liquid" and "solid". The children enjoyed building ice towers, trying to warm it up and watch it melt and then helping me re-fill the ice cube tray and putting it in the freezer for the next day! It's amazing how much these little ones take in! We added some Arctic animals to the ice cube play.... and a Penguin.... oh and a Gorilla and Giraffe also came to visit, but decided it was TOO cold!!

The children have had a lovely time weighing out ingredients for Cookies as well. carefully pouring until the needle on the scales touches the right number. They love using the electric mixer to blend all the ingredients together, cracking eggs (and fishing out the bits of shell) then crushing chocolate in a bag with a rolling pin to add to the cookies!

The good thing about cookie dough is we can wrap the dough in clingfilm and then cut off chunks each day to cook. warm fresh cookies in minutes with out the mess! The boys have loved this little treat after school!

Looking forward to the rest of the week and hoping it will be as much fun!!

I hope everything is going well for you all this new year. I always feel the New Year is just the right time for a new start and a new view on things. I could, in reality do this at any time of the year.... but the Christmas period is the one time of year that I have at least a week off work and so does my partner. We spend that time with the family and take things easy! It gives me time to think about the past 12 months and look at the bits of it I have been unhappy, or uncomfortable with and find a way to make this year better! It is quite a good feeling!

New Years Eve we took the boys down to our village pub for a couple of bottles of Appetiser
The boys are not allowed fizzy drinks so this is a real treat for them and they love the few trips we take there as we don't go to the pub very often.

Can I just point out that Kenzie is NOT drunk in this picture.... but it does make me laugh!!

We then came home and set up the sofa bed for a snuggle night! Pj's on and time to relax! Brendan chose to play a couple of puzzle games on line and Kenzie did his best to stay awake............... which he did till about 10pm, Bless him!

Brendan, Daddy and I saw in the New Year together while Kenzie slept at the bottom of the bed! We watched Big Ben chime and the Fireworks go off along the Thames! We love watching them spin around the London eye! Brendan calls it a Stargate! Sci-fi fans.... can you tell?

Since that day we have spent lots of time together, me and the boys, playing with our new toys and enjoying "Mummy and boy" time, especially as they started back at school on Wednesday :-(

Kenzie set up a cafe and took my order, sounding out each word and writing it down on his paper!

We made dens! The sofa splits in the middle so we could put a clothes horse between the two pieces and then drape the blankets over. Made 2 really neat dens for the boys to play in! The extra cushions and blankets shoved in the table shelves was Brendan's way of blocking out as much light from his half as possible. He was sat in his den with his night vision goggles!!

The boys have found a love for "Angry Birds" on my ipod! This is Brendan's version of the game, made from Lego. The catapult really works and the little green Lego blocks represent the pigs that he has to knock out of the castle. He put little white Lego pieces in the castle and said they were the birds eggs and the birds where trying to save them!

After Kenzie got back from his first day back at school, he asked to do some needle felting. He made "E" (a little boy I look after) a very cute Bunny rabbit with a little bit of help from Mummy. It was so sweet. He even wrapped it up for him and then gave it to him before he went home. "E" was very excited to be given a present and ripped open the tissue paper. He gave his new Bunny a big hug and carried him around until mummy came to pick him up. It was a very sweet and kind moment and I was very proud of his thought for someone else!

We have also had lots and LOTS of Postman Pat and Fireman Sam play! Kenzie has been collecting these sets since last year. This year he has managed to complete his sets and so I have had to be every character and he is Pat or Sam. Pat is his fave at the mo as he is the newest addition. I love listening to him and how his imagination works. The door fell of Pats lorry as we were playing so he said he had to take it to Ted Glens garage to be fixed and to get some more petrol. He then drove his van back to the post office to tell the boss about his broken van.

So that's been our 1st week of the new year! I think it's been a good one. Lots of fun and happy moments!
