LEARNING TO WHITTLE

This weekend the boys received Pen knives and have been given a lesson in safety and respect.

 I have made it clear that these are not toys but tools to be used and then given to me for storage. They seem to be taking this on board and showing them great respect.

We have started with some very basic whittling. They are learning how to hold the knife and fold it back in without cutting themselves  (we have had a small nic to the end of a finger).

Our first lesson has been how to angle the knife correctly to take off a slice and then to work with the knife moving away from you at all times. We started with something very simple, sharpening a stick to a point!

Before long we might be making little animals and fish!!
