AUTUMN SENSORY TRAY AND SORTING ACTIVITY

Today I set up a new seasonal sensory tray. I added lots of Autumn goodies that we had on the shelves or that we had collected on our walks.  I offered several small wooden boxes that we used as sorting trays.

I left this activity out on the table in the playroom and very soon little "L" started to explore all the treasures. naming items as she held them up and looking at each one with interest. I placed one item in to each wooden box and asked her if she could find other items in the box that were the same.

Very soon "L" was gathering up leaves and placing them all together in a box. She counted some of the leaves as she placed them in.

She did really well at sorting different items in to groups. she collected all the squirrels and put them in a pile next to the tray. She also found 2 apples and put them together on the table as well.

CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING:
This activity was offered to the children to give them the opportunity to explore natural items and materials. To use their senses to discover new things. Finding out and exploring. Little "L" was so involved in her play and discovery, making links and choosing new ways to group items.

Today's play, meets the following EYFS Prime and specific areas
  • Communication and Language
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
