MAKING BARA BRITH FOR ST DAVIDS DAY

St Davids Day arrived and we got to make one of our favourite treats, Bara brith. It is a traditional Welsh cake made from tea and mixed fruit. It is really yummy! 

Ingredients

  • ½ pint warm black tea
  • 2 tsp mixed spice
  • 1 free-range egg, beaten
  • Soak the sugar and dried fruit in the warm black tea overnight or for several hours if you do not have time.
  • Mix all the ingredients together and place in a greased cake tin. Place in the oven at 170C/325F/Gas 3 for 1.5 hours or until a skewer comes out clean.

We enjoy a lot of cooking with the pre-school aged children in my setting. Following a recipe is a fantastic way for children to develop their literacy and mathematical skills. They learn that the print carries meaning and that the instructions need to be followed so that they get a good end result. They learn that some things need to be done in the correct sequence. They use mathematical language such as more and less. Heavier and lighter. They look at numbers in the recipe and match them on the scales.  They are also really working hard with their Physical skills, chopping, grating, scooping, mixing, transferring. 

Early years Outcomes- 

Literacy (Reading) 30-50 months
  • Knows information can be relayed in the form of print.  
  • Knows that print carries meaning and, in English, is read from left to right and top to bottom. 
  •  
Mathematical (Numbers) 40-60 months
  • In practical activities and discussion, beginning to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting. 


Each child took a turn to add ingredients and took great care to pour and scoop the required amount on to spoons and scales and then added to the mixing bowl.


We took turns to stir. The children told me that the mixture "was hard to stir, it was heavy."



It took strong muscles to mix everything all together and great care not to flick it up in the air!


We talked about greasing the cake tin. We wanted to make individual cakes for the children to take home so we used this tray rather than a large cake tin. We chatted about how the butter stops the cake sticking to the tin.



LEARNING INTENTIONS AND IDEAS FOR EXPANDING LEARNING:

This activity was offered to

  • Introduce the children to some traditional Welsh food for St Davids day.
  • Use mathematical language and practise our measuring.
  • Learn life skills

This activity was enjoyed by all and will be repeated in the week for children who did not attend today and also for the full timers to revisit and cement their learning. We will eat this at snack time over the week. Warmed and served with butter and a glass of milk. 


CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING:
Little "X" was very keen to carry out tasks for me. Weighing ingredients and telling me when we had reached the correct number on the scales. He used past cooking experience to anticipate the next process and to share his thoughts on why we did things. He Was keen to try the cake once cooked and told me he was taking some home for his family.
Little "R"  Is getting very good at cracking eggs in to cups now. She often asks to do this job. She knows the process for cooking cakes and tells me the ingredients we might use. She is motivated and engaged in this activity and enjoys sharing her knowledge of cooking with her friends.
Little "L" kept an eye on who's turn it was next to carry out a task. She enjoyed mixing the ingredients but told me it was very hard. Despite it being very hard work she kept on trying and managed to do a good job of stirring. She knew that we greased the tin so that the cakes didn't stick.
