DUPLO - ENCLOSURES AND DESIGNATED AREAS.

Following on with the love of Duplo and the learning experiences that are being created through our play, I thought this post was a must for sharing. 

One little child making a long fence. Happily adding new bits to it and talking about how long the fence is. "It's getting longer look!"
Then she runs out of fence and you see her pause for a moment. What now? 
The fence is not very stable in a long line. It wobbles and falls over.
Then she curls the edges round and brings them to meet. Linking them together to make an enclosure.


"Look! I made a field!"
"Wow! What a big field" I say. "What are you going to put in your field?"


"My ponies!"
(I think some of these are sheep..... but she LOVES Ponies so we are going with it....)


Her friend has been making a big house with Duplo and offered for her Ponies to live there. I love the look on her face in this pic..... not totally sure she is pleased about the offer but going to give it a try.



Another friend joins and asks if the ponies want to go in the house. But she declines. Horses go in fields! She puts the people in the house and they talk about where each thing belongs. The add furniture to the house and more animals to the field.
There is a clear understanding here of designated areas. Each thing has it's own place. It is a simple grouping activity happening through play. Learning that some things are the same and some are different.
Being able to sort and catagorise items is important for other daily life skills that children will need to function well as adults. Being able to tidy up your belongings, complete chores such as putting clothes or dishes away. This is the start of some more complex mathematical thinking and Analysing.

Todays play meets the following EYFS Prime and specific areas:
  • Physical Development
  • Mathematical
  • Communication and Language Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional development
