<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The village now has a mobile post van that visits every week! This is great news, super useful and another fun experience for the children. The guy who runs it is getting used to us descending on him with parcels! He even gave each of the children a little treat!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They love helping me carry the things we need to post and great the man with a happy "Hello Postman!" </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We weigh the parcels and hand over money to pay. All great things for the children to be part of. Life skills that they will need when they are older. Looking at weights and dealing with money are all good mathematical skills!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After our trip to the van we took a walk round the village looking at all the flowers and the blossom on the trees. Learning the names of the plants we find. We were very lucky to see a mummy Blackbird feeding her baby. We talked about being quiet around the fledgling so that we didn't scare them away. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once we had done a loop of the village we stopped at the village pub and ordered hot chocolate and a few rounds of toast and jam. The pub is much like a coffee shop and also has the village shop there too so they are used to us all turning up!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The children are getting really good at buttering their own toast now. Another life skill. They counted the toast and we worked out how many pieces each person could have. An early introduction to fractions and division. </span><br />

We were not paid to do this review but were allowed to keep the toys.</span></span></span></span></span><br />
<span class="vat_status" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit;"><span class="ex" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span class="GBP" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.05rem;"><br /></span></span></span></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.8px;">So here goes...... They are super cute, colourful, and the perfect size and weight for little hands to hold and play with. I expected them to be much smaller so I was pleasantly surprised to find they were much larger than standard peg dolls. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.8px;">The hand painted effect makes them feel homemade but with a fantastic finish and quality.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.8px;">They have proved to be durable and despite being played with by 14 children, between the ages of 1 year and 16 years, they have not chipped or scratched! We have tested these over a 4 week period, the duration of our Superhero topic! They are now a firm favourite and have been included in so many other areas of play. The playdough, Fire station, blocks and construction corner and even cuddled at nap time! One Superhero must have had "super baby soothing" powers, as Sucking on his head really helped to cheer her up!</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.8px;"><br /></span></span></span>

<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.8px;">The play mat is designed to be used in a tough tray but as I don't have one I just lay it out and it worked fine like that. Its made from the same type of fabric as a car road mat. This means that it stays put and does not slip about during use. </span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.8px;">Many of the mats I have looked at before, that are slightly cheaper, have been printed on tough vinyl. These are great, but after some washing and use I have found the picture scuffs and can wear off. These will not deteriorate in the same way due to the carpet type fabric they are printed on. For a couple of pounds more you can buy these with a much longer shelf life.</span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.8px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.8px;">The midnight city skyline mat can be found<a href="https://www.earlyyearsresources.co.uk/literacy-c17/storytelling-c54/superhero-rescue-c1483/superhero-city-scene-tuff-tray-mat-p50728" target="_blank"> here for </a> </span></span></span><span class="product-content__price--ex" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; letter-spacing: 0.05rem;"><span class="GBP" style="box-sizing: inherit; letter-spacing: 0.05rem;">£18.95</span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; letter-spacing: 0.05rem;"> </span><span class="vat_status" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; letter-spacing: 0.05rem;"><span class="ex" style="box-sizing: inherit; letter-spacing: 0.05rem;"><span class="GBP" style="box-sizing: inherit; letter-spacing: 0.05rem;">(ex. <span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 15px; letter-spacing: 0.8px;">EYR have a whole range of different Tuff Tray mats available in their range and these are fantastic for enhancing play and creating an inviting play scene.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 15px; letter-spacing: 0.8px;">They are easy to clean by using a damp cloth for any marks and spills and can be hoovered to remove dust and dried soiling. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 15px; letter-spacing: 0.8px;"><br /></span></span>

One of our daily morning jobs is checking on and refilling the bird feeders in the front and back garden. The children love this job and then we all sit in the kitchen window and watch the birds come down for the food. We often have Squirrels that come for the monkey nuts. They have to be quick though because the jackdaws watch us from the roof across the road and as soon as we have gone in they swoop down and grab the nuts for themselves!<br />

<br />
I have a great book that has a page for each bird. It includes most of the common UK garden birds and there is a little picture to press that plays the bird call for you. The children love it and often grab it from the bookshelf after filling the bird feeders, so that they can identify the birds that come and feed.<br />
<br />
Sometimes we make bird feeders too. Especially as the weather starts to get colder and the birds need more help.<br />

By using foam or cardboard rabbit templates we made some cute unique bunny crafts. I gave the children pens, stamps, googly eyes, stickers and let them get creative on their own template!<br />
We also used some chick shapes and added coloured feathers!<br />

Introducing letter sounds and matching them with little toys is such a cheep and simple activity.<br />
This version has an Easter twist by writing upper and lower case letters on plastic eggs and also the word of the matching toy.<br />
Make sure you use the letter sounds rather than the letter names for this activity.<br />

<br />
A fun and simple Easter maths activity for your preschoolers. This can also be adapted for older children by changing the sums that you write on the eggs. Maybe think about multiplication sums for school aged children.<br />
<br />
Write sums with different totals on the eggs and then write the answers on to the bottom of the dents in an egg box or cake mold as I used above.<br />
Then place 2 different counting manipulatives in to the egg to help work out the sum. So in this example you can see 1+2 and I have included 1 rabbit foot and 2 chicks. The children can then use these to help them solve the problem if they get stuck and also to help them check their answers.<br />

<br />
This is a super cheep and fun activity that appeals to babies and school age children alike!<br />
<br />
All you need is a felt or cardboard bunny basket or bunny drawn on a box, with the mouth cut out so that you have a posting hole. You will also need carrot shaped cut outs, real carrots or crafting mini carrots, to use as food for the bunny!<br />
<br />
This set above only cost me £2 and I got the items from Asda's Easter range.<br />
<br />
Choose the size of items to suite the age of children you are going to be using it with. Babies love posting games but small craft carrots are not really best for them as they are easy to bite and quite small.<br />
<br />
Then offer this up as a fun Easter themed posting activity!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These really cheap and effective picture stands were a huge hit with all the mums this year! I found the wooden frames in Poundland for £1 each and then picked up a couple of packs of sticky gems, table confetti hearts and a small pack of buttons. We also used glitter glue, sharpies and acrylic paint to make each one individual!</div>

By adding a small picture of the child in to the heart we made it even more special for mum!<br />

We set up some dressing up for role play and this was a huge hit. They wore the outfits in the garden and used a skipping rope and an inflatable snake as hose pipes! They pretended to put out the fire and also used our old mobile phones to pretend to call the fire brigade.</div>

<br />
The wooden fire station was a big hit too and we had lots of cute stories being acted out. The ladder on the engine was raised to save people from the roof with shouts of "To the RESCUE!!"<br />
<br />
We acted out calling 999 and looked for that number on the old mobile phones that the children have available to play with. I coloured in on one of the 9's on the phones and this helped them to remember the number to call in an emergency. We practiced asking for a fire engine and talked about why we might need to call one. Not just for fires.<br />

I set up a little rock hunting group on facebook for our village last summer. It was such a huge hit with all the children at the school and in the village but with the bad weather over winter it has not been very active. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With this wonderful morning of sun we decided to go out and see if we could find any. We got very lucky and found (and re-hid) loads!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-57TuOHqgYUw/Wph8asTH_fI/AAAAAAAAtE8/E3kynAoE6S8nCZE-Wvw0dQrF_vp7FWzZACLcBGAs/s1600/20180118_103728.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-57TuOHqgYUw/Wph8asTH_fI/AAAAAAAAtE8/E3kynAoE6S8nCZE-Wvw0dQrF_vp7FWzZACLcBGAs/s640/20180118_103728.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
We also look for letters and numbers as we walk. We say the letter sound and then think of someone we know who has a name that starts with that letter. Learning on the go and the children have no idea I am teaching them!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x9Ck3ZWe2Ro/Wph8aBTMZpI/AAAAAAAAtE4/Eqn_C52yDaAD5bL518AFKDzxbzuLgHbcACLcBGAs/s1600/20180118_103907.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x9Ck3ZWe2Ro/Wph8aBTMZpI/AAAAAAAAtE4/Eqn_C52yDaAD5bL518AFKDzxbzuLgHbcACLcBGAs/s640/20180118_103907.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
We found a really cute bird rock. Some of these rocks have been beautifully painted! I know so many adults that really enjoy this community game as much as the kids!<br />
<br />

<br />

<br />
Even littlen in the buggy likes to hold on to some rocks for us!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We also found some amazing pine cones! There is a tree in the village that has HUGE pine cones and we always go and check out the path under its branches to see if it has dropped us a prezzie! This week it left us 2!!<br />
<br />

As part of our winter focus we have made some snowmen to take home. I used the foam cut outs that you can get from places like The Works and Poundland as a base and then provided glue, googly eyes and lots of scraps so that the children could decorate them as they wanted.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dDiaZawOp1Q/Wph3PmmWH_I/AAAAAAAAtEY/6drmoZXXyTwg6JXc5L6E5_klcXzrFCNXQCLcBGAs/s1600/20180118_092214.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dDiaZawOp1Q/Wph3PmmWH_I/AAAAAAAAtEY/6drmoZXXyTwg6JXc5L6E5_klcXzrFCNXQCLcBGAs/s640/20180118_092214.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
We talked about the colours and shapes of the scraps, how many eyes the snowmen might have, what their buttons would look like and loads more. Lots of descriptive language while they play makes learning new words very relaxed and natural. Expanding vocab without the child even realising!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nH-VsIGrCfI/Wph3OS_hNCI/AAAAAAAAtEU/cH99z_KoRysDSJ8bIahjmylNJQoWB5CUACLcBGAs/s1600/20180118_092343.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nH-VsIGrCfI/Wph3OS_hNCI/AAAAAAAAtEU/cH99z_KoRysDSJ8bIahjmylNJQoWB5CUACLcBGAs/s640/20180118_092343.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
These are our finished items. You can see how different they all are. The eldest child added the most eyes which I was not expecting! They like to keep me on my toes!<br />
<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pCu6FSunO3w/Wph0KFyq-fI/AAAAAAAAtEA/ZsPrRI6-sx8FPccPoR6DAevU_GHSX-6JwCLcBGAs/s1600/20180116_121100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pCu6FSunO3w/Wph0KFyq-fI/AAAAAAAAtEA/ZsPrRI6-sx8FPccPoR6DAevU_GHSX-6JwCLcBGAs/s640/20180116_121100.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
It is so easy to loose sight of all the magic in our world. Day to day we go through life, caught up in appointments and things to do, head in our devices and zooming from one place to another. No time to spot the wonders and magic that the world has to share with us.<br />
Working with children opens our eyes once again to all these things and I for one never want to loose this view of life ever again.<br />
An example of this is the reflections and shadows that light creates on a bright sunny day.<br />
Just look at how excited sh is when she notices her shadow and how she can make it move!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ufIQTFgBBzw/Wph0KXTIzfI/AAAAAAAAtEE/WoZ9TQuo9TwIyYRq7rF-zacpRU4SR1YlQCLcBGAs/s1600/20180116_121102%25280%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ufIQTFgBBzw/Wph0KXTIzfI/AAAAAAAAtEE/WoZ9TQuo9TwIyYRq7rF-zacpRU4SR1YlQCLcBGAs/s640/20180116_121102%25280%2529.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
You just can't beat that pure joy! I am looking forward to the summer when we can watch our shadows grow and shrink depending on the height of the sun.<br />

<br />
<br />
We have been having a great time learning about life in cold climates and the Arctic. One of the things we have looked at is how Inuits live and what they eat. One thing we did learn is that most live in quite modern houses now but they still build igloos when they go hunting or for fun!<br />
We decided to set up our own Inuit hunting party and Igloo!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WRKGtx2fpGQ/WphxyiwZrZI/AAAAAAAAtDc/SnE3VEvdyPcMTjBd0ZPGxpYtuC3ZW6WRQCLcBGAs/s1600/20180109_082132.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WRKGtx2fpGQ/WphxyiwZrZI/AAAAAAAAtDc/SnE3VEvdyPcMTjBd0ZPGxpYtuC3ZW6WRQCLcBGAs/s640/20180109_082132.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
We used a wooden fishing set to catch fish and then cook them over the fire for dinner.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gEb45FgIKH4/WphxzYqGyxI/AAAAAAAAtDg/NNa99KN5LP4i7DYqCKB2f01sZtADCUhYgCLcBGAs/s1600/20180109_085549.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gEb45FgIKH4/WphxzYqGyxI/AAAAAAAAtDg/NNa99KN5LP4i7DYqCKB2f01sZtADCUhYgCLcBGAs/s640/20180109_085549.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Be careful. Don't burn your fingers on the hot fire!<br />

<br />
We have also been colouring pictures of animals that live in cold climates and looking at which live in the Arctic and which are from the Antarctic.<br />

<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HwCGvTmiXB0/WlvWXYcpRbI/AAAAAAAAs2k/JuBUzA71K3YABvTd8bWuePw9FHxmkquOgCLcBGAs/s1600/20180104_084003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HwCGvTmiXB0/WlvWXYcpRbI/AAAAAAAAs2k/JuBUzA71K3YABvTd8bWuePw9FHxmkquOgCLcBGAs/s640/20180104_084003.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
We have been enjoying this lovely winter sensory tray. I was lucky enough to find these glowing trees in Poundland over Christmas, which offer another sensory element to the tray. We also added some Frozen figures that we had collected from kinder eggs!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N3N1KvHer78/WlvXDaFeNQI/AAAAAAAAs24/ErQLYB0ei0otWXSuGJSlsMiphh2ttOusACLcBGAs/s1600/20180102_102038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N3N1KvHer78/WlvXDaFeNQI/AAAAAAAAs24/ErQLYB0ei0otWXSuGJSlsMiphh2ttOusACLcBGAs/s640/20180102_102038.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Kenzie wanted to make the snow so we all sat around as he measured out a couple of spoons of the instant snow powder. We couldn't believe this small amount could make a whole dish of snow! It was really interesting to watch the snow grow!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eERPPvokTSg/WlvXDfsQCnI/AAAAAAAAs28/vHILIm5wV_syRFoF_015216pm6aIqHN5QCLcBGAs/s1600/20180102_101739.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eERPPvokTSg/WlvXDfsQCnI/AAAAAAAAs28/vHILIm5wV_syRFoF_015216pm6aIqHN5QCLcBGAs/s640/20180102_101739.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YoFUtEYIpPQ/WlvXCzkZpLI/AAAAAAAAs20/4nBw59iox2sYllGsel0QXIAIg_GI3-X-wCLcBGAs/s1600/20180102_101758.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YoFUtEYIpPQ/WlvXCzkZpLI/AAAAAAAAs20/4nBw59iox2sYllGsel0QXIAIg_GI3-X-wCLcBGAs/s640/20180102_101758.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
It didn't take long for the children to all flock round to play. I found it worked better in pairs as the dish was quite small and I felt it would help to avoid arguments if we played in small groups.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TpbES-g-eYc/WlvWzOdJ9AI/AAAAAAAAs2w/oz6I1FLWtVUAcs5_zt9dn_I78qL2ZhPEQCEwYBhgL/s1600/20180103_092535.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TpbES-g-eYc/WlvWzOdJ9AI/AAAAAAAAs2w/oz6I1FLWtVUAcs5_zt9dn_I78qL2ZhPEQCEwYBhgL/s640/20180103_092535.jpg" width="640" /></a></li>
</ul>
<br />
<br />
There was a lot of chat about the texture and feel of the snow.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>soft</b></li>
<li><b>cold</b></li>
<li><b>smooth</b></li>
<li><b>light</b></li>
<li><b>fluffy</b></li>
</ul>
<div>
With supervision I used this activity with my babies. 1:1 in a high chair and I did not allow them to eat it. I am sure ingesting a little would cause no harm but I would not leave a young child alone with activity. I do feel that they should be able to enjoy it if possible. You know your children and you know if you have a child that puts everything in the mouth or if they are more likely to enjoy the feel of it on their hands.</div>
<div>

<br />
I really like the Safari Toobs that you can buy from toy shops and Amazon. They are well made and usually a good price. We use them in small world or messy/ sensory play. They can often be used to link with a topic or theme and are perfect size for small hands.<br />
<br />
I wanted to teach the children the names of the creature and and people that lived in the Arctic so I took pictures of each of the items and then printed them out on to an A4 sheet.. I then laminated the sheet to protect it and added it to a try with the items.<br />
<br />
This makes a perfect matching game for the children. As they match one, we say its name. Helping to make the link between the item and its name.<br />

We have also used this tray while watching a nature film about the Arctic. Each time we see a new animal on the screen we look on our tray to see if we have one too!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
We are using white pom poms as counting manipulative's for this activity and jars with numbers written on them, placed in sequence. We then count the correct number of snowballs in to each jar.<br />
I added the tweezers for a an extra bit of fun and to work the finger muscles at the same time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cjucaWhqapk/WlUdnyAgm6I/AAAAAAAAs1Q/3yJLMN2lklcsxlwqlUpMp9aE0Os6EqxFQCLcBGAs/s1600/20180102_100336.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cjucaWhqapk/WlUdnyAgm6I/AAAAAAAAs1Q/3yJLMN2lklcsxlwqlUpMp9aE0Os6EqxFQCLcBGAs/s640/20180102_100336.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
To extend this activity further you could sort the snowballs by size. Small, medium and large.<br />

<br />
This Snowman activity is great to encourage little hands to cut and follow a line. We are starting with straight lines as this is easier when learning to cut. The prinatables for these are available in my online shop so just <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Montessori-Christmas-tray-activity-printouts-3533271" target="_blank">click here</a> and print them off for <b>FREE!</b><br />
<br />
I use practice scissors for the children in my setting at the moment as most are just learning to cut and these are great for getting the action of cutting without all the hard work. They spring open after each cut.<br />

<br />
A lovely start to our Christmas brake. Joining a Midwinter celebration with friends in a lovely woodland setting.<br />
Stick bread over the fire and hot apple juice.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E5kK3eHt-EM/WlPhDgT0CQI/AAAAAAAAsxE/kiXx14lRc5gYw81rZJWbfREuVkGQRYXxwCLcBGAs/s1600/20171221_160132.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E5kK3eHt-EM/WlPhDgT0CQI/AAAAAAAAsxE/kiXx14lRc5gYw81rZJWbfREuVkGQRYXxwCLcBGAs/s400/20171221_160132.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We ended the celebration with a spiral walk and singing. It created such a calm and gentle atmosphere and once all the candles were lite you could hear a beautiful tune all around.<br />

<br />
There are many versions of this game out there in the supermarkets. We have enjoyed the snowman and the Brussel sprout! This one I believe I bought from Poundland. The idea is to pass it around the circle and each person takes off a layer. You either get nothing, a prize or a forfeit. The little ones were a bit too little to do most of the forfeits but the older children were keen to step up and do it for them.<br />

<br />
I am not keen on mass production cards for celebrations. I appreciate they are cute and that they might be easy when in a setting with many children, but I do feel making individual cards can be just as simple to do. I set out a table with lots of different Christmas realtaed items, pens glue and different coloured card and ask the children to make a card for a loved one.<br />
The different ideas that they come up with and the items they choose to use results in a truly unique card that is bright and beautiful!<br />
<br />
As a parent I would be much happier receiving something that my child had created using their own imagination and that was personal to me and my child than a mass produced card that everyone else received and that my child had little creative input in to.<br />
<br />
So next time you need to make a card for a celebration, ditch the Pinterest ideas and just let the kids create their own. See what you think!<br />

<br />
We do love a good tray activity in my house! I think it provides a little bit of structured play to balance out the free play.<br />
<br />
This activity is all about starting sounds and letter recognition. To help the children recognise the starting sound, I coloured it red and then asked them to find the matching letter at the bottom of the card. Some children pick this up really quickly while others need to work on it a few times to understand what we are asking of them. Don't be put off if your child needs more encouragement to start with, just do a few with them and talk through what you are doing. Model by example.<br />
<br />
The cute little Santa pegs were one of my Poundland bargains. I got a pack of about 20 pegs for £1.<br />

These snowflakes are really easy to make and a fun decoration to make your house look festive!<br />

<br />
This is a cute personal decoration that I made with my little ones this year. The hand print makes it individual to each child as well as the decoration that they chose to use on it.<br />

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14.85px;">Draw round the child's hand and then carefully cut it out. <br />
I thought it would be really nice to use some of the small Christmas manipulatives that I have as counters on a letter recognition activity. These sheets are downloadable and I have included the link below. Use a manipulative as a counter to cover up each letter that matches the letter you have been asked to look for. For example the picture above is the T for tree.<br />
<br />
I made a T for Tree and B for Bauble sheet which are available for <b>FREE</b> on my TPT online shop. Just <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Montessori-Christmas-tray-activity-printouts-3533271" target="_blank">click here</a> to download them.<br />

Prezzie sorting!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kJwRYDRQwHo/WlMy-vxBB2I/AAAAAAAAsug/ikNp3nf0Ru0IZwIGO-MPEhq5X8amAZtMQCLcBGAs/s1600/20171204_142320.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kJwRYDRQwHo/WlMy-vxBB2I/AAAAAAAAsug/ikNp3nf0Ru0IZwIGO-MPEhq5X8amAZtMQCLcBGAs/s640/20171204_142320.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Who fancies helping Santa with his prezzie sorting? EVERYONE!!<br />
I ordered some of these little decorative gift boxes from Amazon. They were only a couple of pounds for a large pack and came in a mixture of colours. This activity was first offered up as a simple transferring activity. Using the tweeters and moving the parcels from one basket to another. A great way to work those finger muscles ready for writing!<br />
<br />
As time passed I altered it slightly and asked the children to group the parcels by colour. Then for the older children we started to organise each colour group in order of which had the most and which had the least.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SE7PtLBMbJk/WlM1cgrt_ZI/AAAAAAAAsuw/u26utOVFMtkt4xVyWfC5KjEHJVjJvg1HACLcBGAs/s1600/20171205_095748.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SE7PtLBMbJk/WlM1cgrt_ZI/AAAAAAAAsuw/u26utOVFMtkt4xVyWfC5KjEHJVjJvg1HACLcBGAs/s640/20171205_095748.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
A fun addition to this would be to add a small wooden slay as the second basket so that children are filling Santa's sleigh. Sadly I didn't have one.<br />
<br />
This activity does need to be supervised as the one time I left it unsupervised, the children unwrapped all my boxes....... oppps!<br />
